カパケイリーはスコットランド出身で高校の同級生カレン・マセソン （Karen Matheson、ヴォーカル） とドナルド・ショウ （Donald Shaw、キーボード） が中心で結成された．

創設メンバーは、
　− カレン・マセソン （Karen Matheson、ヴォーカル）
　− ドナルド・ショウ （Donald Shaw、キーボード）
　− マーク・ダフ （Marc Duff、ボラン［片面太鼓］、イーリアン・パイプ）
　− ジョン・マクローリン （Joan MacLachlan、ヴァイオリン、ヴォーカル）
　− ショーン・クレイグ （Shaun Craig、ギター、ブズーキ）
　− マーティン・マクラウド （Martin MacLeod、アコースティック・ベイス、ヴァイオリン） の６人．
１９８４年に 『Capercaillie : Cascade (CD/1984)』 でデビューしたが、１９８６年の 『Capercaillie : Ceosswinds (CD/1986)』 が本格的なアルバム・デビューとなる．以後１４枚のアルバムとベスト盤３枚を発表している．

メンバーは何回か替わり、現在のメンバーは、

彼らの曲は半数以上の曲が、ケルト人の言葉ゲール語で歌われている．

カレン・マセソンは１９６３年２月１１日生まれで、カパケイリーのヴォーカリストのかたわら、ソロ・アルバムを３枚発表している．
