モダン・フォーク・グループのニュー・クリスティー・ミンストレルズ / New Christy Minstrels を経て、ジム・マッギン / Jim McGuinn、デイヴィッド・クロズビー / David Crosby らとザ・バーズ / The Byrds を結成．２枚のアルバムに参加した後に脱退し、ソロになる．ダグ・ディラードとディラード＆クラーク / Dillard & Clark 結成するが、１９６９年には再びソロで活動する．一時的に、ザ・フライング・ブリトー・ブラザーズ / The Flying Burrito Brothers やジム・マッギン / Jim McGuinn とクリス・ヒルマン / Chris Hillman とのトリオに参加．アルコール性潰瘍が悪化する中、カーラ・オルソン / Carla Olson とのデュオが最後の活動となる．
