クリス・ヒルマン （Chris Hillman、１９４２年月７月１３生まれ） はブルー・グラスのマンドリン・プレイヤーだったが、ジーン・クラーク （Gene Clark、ヴォーカル）、ジム・マッギン （ Jim McGuinn、リード・ギター、ヴォーカル）、デイヴィッド・クロズビー （David Crosby、リズム・ギター、ヴォーカル）、マイケル・クラーク （Michael Clarke、ドラムズ） の４人で結成されたばかりのザ・バーズ / The Byrds にベイス・ギタリストとしてリクルートされた．

ザ・バーズ / The Byrds に参加するまでベイス・ギターは弾いたことがなく、デビュー・シングル "Mr. tambourine man" には間に合わなかったが、『The Byrds : Mr. Tambourine Man (LP/1965)』 では、無難にこなしている．

『The Byrds : Younger Than Yesterday (LP/1967)』 ではカントリー・ロックのさきがけとなる "Time between" と "The girl with no name" とを作曲、リード・ヴォーカルをとっている．

この２曲はクラレンス・ホワイト / Clarence White がザ・バーズ / The Byrds にはじめてゲスト参加した曲であるとともに、メジャーなＬＰではじめてストリング・ベンディング・ギター / String bending guitar を披露した曲でもある．

『The Byrds : The Notorious Byrd Brothers (LP/1968)』 を挟んで、クラレンス・ホワイト / Clarence White、グラム・パーソンズ / Gram Parsons とともに、エレクトリック・フォーク系のミュージシャンが演奏するカントリー＆ウエスタンのアルバム 『The Byrds : Sweetheart Of The Rodeo (LP/1968)』 制作の原動力となった． 『The Byrds : Sweetheart Of The Rodeo (LP/1968)』 制作後、カントリー・ロックを目指すクリス・ヒルマン / Chris Hillman と、エレクトリック・フォークを目指すジム・マッギン / Jim McGuinn と袂を分かち、グラム・パーソンズ / Gram Parsons とザ・フライング・ブリトー・ブラザーズ / The Flying Burrito Brothers を結成する．

１９７１年にザ・フライング・ブリトー・ブラザーズ / The Flying Burrito Brothers を解散してからは、 ステファン・スティルス ・マナサス / Stephen Stills Manassas やＪ．Ｄ．サウザー （J. D. Souther） とリッチー・フューレイ （Richie Furay） とのザ・サウザー・ヒルマン・フューレイ・バンド / The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band を経て、カントリー系のソング・ライター / シンガーとして活躍をしている．
