兄弟グループ、ザ・ブラック・ファミリー （The Black Family） を経て、長女メアリーと次女フランセスはソロ歌手としてデビューする．

メアリー・ブラック （１９５５年５月２２日生れ） は、サンディ・デニーやビリー・ホリデイ / Billie Holiday、アレサ・フランクリン、ボニー・レイットに影響を受け、プロの歌手を目指した．
１９８２年にジェネラル・フンバート （General Humbert） でデビューしデ・ダナン （De Danann） にも参加、１９８３年に 『Mary Black : Mary Black (CD/1982)』 でソロ・デビューする．
１９８７年にはスタジオ録音デモだけで終わったサンディ・デニー / Sandy Denny の "By the time it gets dark [Sandy Denny]" を カヴァーし、３枚目のアルバム・タイトルにしている．
メアリー・ブラックのアルバムは、アイルランド盤 / イギリス盤とアメリカ盤と日本盤では収録曲、ボーナス・トラックも何曲かが異なっているので、ここでは、アイルランド盤 / イギリス盤に基づいて解説する．
